Sitges, smart and sustainable

Events are changing, now sustainability, emotions, “engagement” are essential for the sector, and this is why Sitges is adapting to the new trends. The Biosphere Gold certification and the certificate of membership in the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI), are a source of opportunities to adapt to the present moment.

Since 2006, Sitges has a responsible tourism policy approved by the local council. In 2024 Sitges has once again renewed the Biosphere Destination certification, Gold category, in recognition of the joint work done by the administration and local businesses, which reinforces the work done to implement a sustainable development model structured on the basis of the 17 SDG established in the 2030 agenda. Biosphere certificate accredits the sustainability of both destinations and their companies, and it is endorsed by the World Tourism Organization. The destination and 32 companies and tourist attractions in Sitges, as well as its beaches, the Garraf Park, the Sitges – Aiguadolç Marina and the Terramar Golf Club, among others, are currently aligned with the Biosphere sustainable commitment.

Sitges joined in 2022 the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations, a project of the Secretary of State for Tourism to improve the competitiveness and digitalization of the tourism sector, based on governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and technology as its cornerstones.
